THE HOLLYWOOD SPOTLIGHT by Steve Rangel Red Tiger "Evolution" Sometimes a band describes themselves, through their music, much better
than I ever could. Track number seven on Red Tiger's outstanding new release
"Evolution" is entitled "Noise & Rhythm". This is
a rather spot-on description of this quartet's music, approach, and attitude.
An urgent, impassioned wall of sound combined with groove, melody, and intelligent
lyrics. And the end result is quite impressive and thoroughly enjoyable.
Red Tiger is Alejandro Figueroa/drums & vocals, Jahaziel Ramirez/bass,
Alexis Perez/lead guitar, and Red Latu/vocals & guitar. The band fits
neatly into the 'hard rock' category, but to simply label them as such is
to sell this unit short. There is a depth to their music that separates
them from the pack. Their songs are (mostly) heavy, and their style is aggressive.
But Red Tiger is not reckless, pointless, or heavy just for heaviness' sake.
They are calculating and deliberate. Their arrangements are thoughtful and
polished, and the album as a whole (fourteen tracks) is well balanced. You
have several fist-in-the-air rock anthems ("Never Going Away",
"Rock Nation", "Be Proud"), a couple of deep thinkers
("Evolution", "Tomorrow Might Never Come"), a good ol'
fashioned power ballad ("Until We Meet Again"), and a genuine
he/she duet (the excellent "Foolish Heart" with guest vocalist
Caroline). While comparisons are always dicey, Red Tiger reminds me of a
modern version of Riot: heavy but not obnoxiously heavy, melodic but not
sappy melodic. The production on this effort fits the material perfectly.
This is not a glossy presentation. Recorded at Wire Road Studios in Houston
TX by Andy Bradley and James Kelley, "Evolution" is raw and powerful,
exuding a live performance vibe that I have to believe was very intentional.
All of these elements combine to create an exhilarating listen. If this
offering is any indication, the future is a bright one for Red Tiger. Rock
on, boys.
